How Unemployment Benefits Are Calculated
Each state has its own formula, but most calculate your weekly benefit based on wages earned during a "base period" — typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters. Your weekly benefit amount (WBA) is generally 50-60% of your average weekly wage, up to a state maximum.
State Benefit Comparison
| State | Max Weekly | Max Weeks | Max Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Massachusetts | $1,015 | 30 | $30,450 |
| Washington | $999 | 26 | $25,974 |
| California | $450 | 26 | $11,700 |
| Texas | $577 | 26 | $15,002 |
| Mississippi | $235 | 26 | $6,110 |
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, you generally must have been laid off through no fault of your own, earned minimum wages during the base period, and be actively seeking work. Quitting or being fired for misconduct typically disqualifies you, though some states allow benefits for "good cause" reasons like unsafe working conditions.
CareerOneStop — Find Unemployment Benefits→Frequently Asked Questions
Are unemployment benefits taxable?
Yes — unemployment benefits are taxable at the federal level and in most states. You can elect to have 10% withheld for federal taxes when you file your claim. If you don't, set aside money for your tax bill.
Can I work part-time while collecting benefits?
Most states allow part-time work with reduced benefits. Earnings above a certain threshold (often 25-50% of your weekly benefit) reduce your payment dollar-for-dollar. Report all earnings — failure to report is considered fraud.
